Potential ecological effects of the Red King Crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) as a newly invasive species in Iceland.
  • Type: Research
  • Published: August 2015

The Red King Crab (RKC) has spread immensely in Russia and Norway and will likely spread farther, even to Iceland. This thesis tries to explain the ecological impact it has had as an alien species and what impact it could have in Icelandic waters. Research has shown the effects of RKC are different depending on the areas it chooses to settle in. The RKC feeds on bottom laying fish eggs and is also considered a competitor for prey of other commercially important specie. In Norway the effects have been more severe than in Russia because of different ocean topography. The effects mainly show in changes in soft bottom benthic environments. However it seems the ecological effects of the RKC are reducing in Norway as they did in Russia after the RKC’s period of “trial and error” while settling. It is difficult to tell to how and where the RKC could migrate to in Iceland and what the affect would be on the Icelandic ocean flora. It is obvious that it would be different depending on settling areas. The effects could be severe to begin with but reduce as the RKC settles. The RKC is considered both a valuable commercial species and an alien species with the hazards associated with that

Interviewed in the book: Seawomen of Iceland - Survival on the Edge by Margaret Willson
  • Type: Novel
  • Published: April 2016

The plaque said this was the winter fishing hut of Thurídur Einarsdóttir, one of Iceland's greatest fishing captains, and that she lived from 1777 to 1863. "Wait," anthropologist and former seawoman Margaret Willson said. "She??" So began a quest. Were there more Icelandic seawomen? Most Icelanders said no, and, after all, in most parts of the world fishing is considered a male profession. What could she expect in Iceland? She found a surprise. This book is a glimpse into the lives of vibrant women who have braved the sea for centuries. Their accounts include the excitement, accidents, trials, and tribulations of fishing in Iceland from the historic times of small open rowboats to today's high-tech fisheries. Based on extensive historical and field research, Seawomen of Iceland allows the seawomen's voices to speak directly with strength, intelligence, and - above all - a knowledge of how to survive. This engaging ethnographic narrative will intrigue both general and academic readers interested in maritime culture, the anthropology of work, Nordic life, and gender studies.

Interest

I love being out in the nature, biking, hiking or on a small boat in the middle of Breiðafjörður bay where my beloved hometown Stykkishólmur stands by. I love spending time with my family, playing board games, taking my kids out to explore, or in a group of friends playing instruments and singing. I love dancing and I love eating - exploring new food is in my mind one of the main reasons for traveling and I can never order the same thing that everyone else is having at a restaurant.
